This is ‘immersive theatre’, so-called because the screen is so huge it covers the ceiling and sides of the dome. It will seem as if the viewer is floating amongst the planets, asteroids and galaxies. The experience will be enhanced by reclining seats and a powerful surround-sound system.

 

INTECH’s Director, Phil Winfield said: ‘It was always envisaged to have a planetarium at INTECH since its move to Morn Hill in 2002. The dome was built then but only now, with the generous support of the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), has this important development become possible. We are really excited about this project. You could say we are over the moon!’

 

Funding for the Planetarium was granted by SEEDA, who were impressed with INTECH’s educational commitment and facilities.

 

The Planetarium will be open to the public in March 2008 and a major opening event is planned. In addition to the public shows, a large demand is expected from schools because the solar system and universe is part of the National Curriculum. The size of the Planetarium will allow whole year groups to visit thereby helping schools with their organisation. A manager for the Planetarium will be appointed who will create and present the shows.

 

The installation will be made by the U.K. company Global Immersion Ltd, previously part of SEOS, the international visual display company. Global Immersion will install the software programmes and the computer- controlled six-projector system. The giant screen, measuring 17metres in diameter, will come from the USA.

 

Phil Winfield said: “The planets and universe are frequently in the news and people remain fascinated by Outer Space. The new Planetarium will make this vast subject more understandable and accessible.
